Bike Highlight : Kona Sutra 2011 Touring Bike

I thought i'd jot down a few words about one of the bikes that has really caught our eye this year. Whilst possibly not the most fashionable bike or the lightest bike in the range , the Kona Sutra offers some riders the ultimate riding experience.

With off the shelf features such as front and rear racks , fenders , Bar end shifters and a tough butted steel frame. Its ready to tour from day one.

Kona have designed the sutra to be ready to ride in all conditions adding cable operated disc brakes into the mix and not just any old cable disc brakes either! Avid BB7 Road which in my opinion are pretty much the best , for ease of adjustment and stopping power.

The bar end shifters are connected to a low profile Shimano Deore XT Shadow Rear mech at the rear and a Shimano Tiagra at the front. Again a Shadow rear deraileur hasn't been picked just to sound cool, Shadow mechs are designed to be a low profile as possible so not as to catch on rocks and other obsticles. Some may feel you don't really need this feature on a touring bike but as i've broken a few mechs in my time and any help in clearance is always a good thing.

The wheelset is also pretty swish for the money, Shimano Deore Disc hubs which are nice and easy to service. The tyres are Continental Contacts which feature conti's safe guard system which is designed to keep you puncture free.

All in all we really like the Kona Sutra and feel its a cracking touring/Commutting/Do it all bike for the money. For a limited time were also offering a deal on them where you get £100 of free goods to go with the bike, Check out the Kona Sutra page here for full details.

Salsa Casseroll Single Complete 51cm

We managed to get our hands on the only Salsa Casseroll Single Complete in the UK. Its a pretty tasty machine!

Here's what salsa have to say :

Simple and to the point, Casseroll Single gets you where you want to go with singlespeed gearing. A singlespeed road bike you say? Yup. We’re talking one gear that you pedal fast or slow, up hills and down, and all around town.

Casseroll Single starts out with our extremely versatile Casseroll frameset. Crafted of Salsa Classico CroMoly, the frameset provides the resilient feel that steel is famous for.

Designed around long reach brakes, the frameset allows you to run nice large road tires: 700c x 32mm with full fenders and 700c x 37mm without. Big tires may add some weight, but we feel the extra comfort is well worth it while riding on rough roads or well-worn paths.

Our partially polished, stainless steel, forward-entry horizontal dropouts make for easy chain tensioning. Interested in running fixed? Flip-flop the rear Surly New hub and add a track cog. Finishing touches include fender and rear rack mount braze-ons, and a pump peg.

Casseroll Single is all about riding while not fretting over what gear you’re in. Just roll up those pants cuffs, spin those pedals, and go somewhere. Enjoy the simple life, try riding single.

Casseroll Single. Getting the job done…simply.

We've done a few build ups with the Salsa Casseroll frame but we do really like the simplicity of this one. I think with some Full length silver mudguards and some MKS Sylan Touring Pedals it'll look super classic!

The complete bike retails at £649.99 and we're offering 10% worth of free goods.

Dick's Bullet-Proof Commuter Bike

Firstly sorry for the distinct lack of updates. Its been a busy summer for us, which is no excuse i know. But i promise we'll try to do better!

This week saw us complete a pretty tasty Surly Cross Check for a customer who wanted something just right. Dicks kindly done a write up of his new bike so rather than me rambling on i'll now pass you over to him to tell you all about his new bike :-

When my employer Kelvin Hughes signed up to the Cyclescheme I knew I could finally do something I always wanted to do, have a bike custom built to my specifications (a bit like Rob Penn's Ride of My Life: The Story of the Bicycle) and, of course Trion were the natural choice to do this. I'm a pretty big guy and as I have a 18 miles daily commute on London's
potholed roads it's vital I have a bike that stands-up to the job and is as maintenance free as can be. Over the past few years I've already seen of a Specialized Langster, a Dawes Discovery, a Pashley Roadster and even my classic a Raleigh Touriste (a Reynolds 531 touring bike) was being to fall apart at the spokes so the guys at Trion recommended a Surly CrossCheck frame<http://www.surlybikes.com/>. I also wanted some gears again after the Langster, but I really hate all the maintenance and cleaning you need to do in the winter so after a great deal of research (and a lot of
reading the fine works of Sheldon Brown) I chose an Alfine hub to go be built into 36 spoke black Salsa Delgardo wheels. These, of course, had to be topped off with the closest thing you can get to a puncture proof tire - Schwlabe Marathon Plus. (I've punctured one once, but it took a massive piece of glass to do it!) I know I wanted flat bars because I find it safer on the busy city roads to be more upright and I wanted to have Ergon GC2 grips, but I really wasn't sure what bar to choose. Luke recommended a Torsion Bar by Surly. Luke also recommended:

* DIATECH D-Cup Headset
* Shimano M590 Deore front hub
* Shimano Alfine 2-piece chainset and Bottom Bracket
* Shimano SL-S500 Rapidfire lever
* Avid Shorty 4 '09 Cantilever Brake
* Avid Speed Dial 7 Brake Levers Graphite
* System Ex Seatpost

When the build was complete I handed Luke my SPD's my girlfriend bought me for my birthday, my trusty old Tubus Rack (the very best in my humble opinion) and Brooks B17 (It's only 3 years old so only just starting to be worn in!) and that evening I picked it up.

It was stunning! Smooth, responsive, very strong and because Triton had taken the time to listen to what I wanted I didn't have to change or adjust a single thing. I rode straight home and then just kept going all the way to
London Bridge!

I can whole heartedly recommend the Surly CrossCheck and Triton are most certainly the most expert place you can buy one.

Indeed I can honest say I've not been so excited about a bike since my Dad gave me a second hand Grifter when I was 11! (Now that IS a bike ... !)
